It is best to store wine in a dark, cool place with minimal temperature fluctuations, no vibrations or powerful odours. Sparkling wines and screwcap bottles can be stored upright. Otherwise, bottles should be kept on their side in a fairly humid environment. This stops air from entering and keeps the cork moist. Most cheaper wines are intended to be drunk by a year after purchase or in the case of reds two years. In the average home either a suitable cupboard or under the stairs will be perfectly sufficient.
Try not to keep wine in the kitchen as the strong scents, vibrations and varying temperatures can have a negative effect on the wine.
For long term storage you can buy a special wine fridge which will keep your bottles in perfect conditions for years.
