“Qualitatively, its best wines from the top vineyards are classy, backed by a good cast of supporters from leading domains in all appellations.”
– John Livingstone-Learmonth, Decanter World Wine Awards Regional Chair for Rhone.
“2009 has turned out to be an excellent vintage.”
– Robert Parker.
Some regions experienced the lowest rainfall in 46 years. The heat stress was such that many vignerons were direly concerned about the alcohol levels of their wines. September rainfall was sorely needed, and it came, but it was not overbearing.
Villages with water-retaining clays (Vacqueyras or Gigondas, for example) fared very well. The best of these wines are simply excellent – concentrated, powerful and capable of taking on more weight as time goes on. The juice is also intense enough that it will take on a lot of oak, which means more modern estates will have had much success on the whole.
Expect these wines to flourish in their youth for up to five or six years. The very best wines from the likes of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas will possess the balance necessary to last for a good twenty years or more.
