Chateau Gazin The estate was originally a farm belonging to the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem, Rhodes and Malta. The present day chateau was once a village in the 18th century and is located on a hospital built by the Knights to accommodate pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostella. In 17722 it was purchased by the Feuilhade family who were pioneers of the viticultural revolution – where production of quality wine was favoured over cereals.
The estate became property of the Bailliencourt dit Courcols – descendents of the High Lords of Landas. The nickname “courcol” means short neck and aws given to one of them by King Philippe Auguste in 1214 for exceptional bravery and skill in the Battle of Bouvines.
In the beginning of the 20th century Louis Soualle, the present day owners’ great grand-father, purchased Gazin. Their children represent the fifth generation of winemakers on the father’s as well as the mother’s side of the family.
The estate consists of 26 hectares with a grape variety presence of 90 percent Merlot, 7 percent Cabernet Sauvignon and 3 percent Cabernet Franc. The annual production of cases is 8,000 of the grand vin. View our wines from Chateau Gazin
