Listrac-Medoc.jpg) The Listrac region is protected by the nearby Landes pine forest which serves as a ward against prevailing winds. This allows grapes to ripen consistently and gradually which vastly improves the quality of the wine. The soil consists of a series of gravel terraces with a limestone bedrock, encouraging complex root systems and providing superb drainage. Wines produced here are highly tannic with a firm structure and spicy aromas.
Arguably the leader of the pack here is Chateau Ducluzeau which produces deep and well structured wines with flavours of spice, soy and blackcurrants – all with a distinctive chewiness. The comparatively reasonably priced wines of the Listrac are not to be overlooked.
Soil: Three layers of gravel over a base of limestone. Clay can also be found.
Size: 700 hectares
Output: approx 5,000,000 bottles a year.
Type of wine produced: Tannic and highly structured medium-bodied reds
