Cru Bourgeois Classification:
Following the widespread destruction and slump of the First World War, the first classification of the Cru Bourgeois properties of the Medoc was drawn up by the Bordeaux Chamber of Commerce and Chamber of Agriculture in 1932. They bestowed the esteemed label to 444 properties and it was visible on labels for six decades – even though it was never officially ratified by the Agriculture Ministry!
By the end of the 1900s the renown of several of the Cru Bourgeois had grown enormously and it was obvious that a tiered classification system was required. In 2000 a ministerial decree laid out the framework for a new classification, and this was subsequently ratified in 2003. Of the 490 that submitted to the new classification only 247 made the grade – a shocking contraction of the original listing made in 1932. The classification was made up of three tiers – Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel (the very best wines, with just 9 estates on this rung of the ladder), Cru Bourgeois Superieur (87 estates) and then Cru Bourgeois (151 estatse). There was also a plan to review the classification every 12 years – no doubt with a knowing eye on the archaic yet persistent legacy of the 1855 classification.
Controversy ensued with so many properties not being included in the classification. In 2004 a regional court in Bordeaux sided with over 70 complaints against the system, concluding their rankings within the system were not applicable, but felt the main body of the classification was valid. However, in early 2007 the classification crumbled. The Bordeaux magistrate, Jean-Pierre Valeins, concluded in court that four of the 18 members of the selection panel had active vested interests in a number of the classified properties. The classification was annulled, returning all properties to their plain 1932 label of Cru Bourgeois.
In the aftermath of this collapse a new classification has been proposed, stipulating that:
- Cru Bourgeois is a designation of quality only.
- The right to use the term is based on production methods, as judged by a visit to the property and a tasting of the results as determined by the tasting of the wine.
- It is an annual qualification, awarded by a neutral organisation.
- The qualification may be obtained by any property in the Medoc.
However, this has yet to be implemented and it seems that it will only be operational with the 2008 vintage as assessed by a tasting panel in early 2010.
