Côtes de Bourg.jpg) This winemaking region is located on the right bank of the Dordogne, just where it meets the Gironde River. This merging of two great rivers provides a sunny microclimate on the hills that overlook the Gironde. This cools summers and combats spring frost.
The hills have a sturdy clay-limestone base while the sandy gravel deposits are often covered in brown and red marl – of which Merlot is a fan (accounting for 67% of vines planted).
The wines are usually deep and intense purple with aromas of stewed blackberries and hints of spices and herbs. The white Cotes de Bourg wines are extremely rare – only 20 hectares are in production. A blend of Sauvignon, Semillon and Colombard they lure the drinker in with their mouth-filling texture and power. Gentle aromas of peaches, white flowers and citrus fruits are to be found.
