2010 is to 2009 what 1990 was to 1989. Two excellent vintages, but differing stylistically. Whereas 2009 boasts a kind of velvety opulence, 2010 harks back to the more ‘classical’ Bordeaux style.
In terms of weather, the year was defined by a drought which puts even the bone-dry 2005 vintage to shame. Ordinarily this would prove disastrous, but overall temperatures hovered around average, whereas August was significantly cooler than July. This preserved the all-important acidity, which provides balance to the strong tannic presence (picture two musclemen locked in an arm wrestle!)
What can we expect from 2010 Bordeaux, then? The reds are deliciously fruity, poised and in possession of great complexity and balance. Green tannins will provide a rustic edge, in line with the classical Bordeaux style. Whites are a resounding triumph: Fresh, aromatic, invigorating and with all the zippy acidity required to keep the various jostling components working in harmony. Desert wines are not quite as decadent as in 2009, but again this is more of a stylistic shift than a decline in quality: These are the prettiest wines in living memory, with great purity and delicate flowery aromas.
